Mock Ups

 Contents page mock up:

After I created the mock up for my contents page, I decided that I didn't want to include the grey boxes behind the text as I thought that it looked better without when I was making my real contents pages. I also added more sub headings and page numbers to the text. There was also a caption for the photo on both of my real contents pages, but I added another photo to the page as well because other magazines content pages that I had looked at had more than one photo, and I thought that this would be better as I could include more photos of my models to make my magazine more of a fashion magazine.

Cover Page 1 Mock up:

For my first mock up of my magazine, I included a medium close up to show more of their clothes in the shot, but when choosing the photo for my my real magazine, I decided that I only wanted their faces in it and to include these photos in my contents page instead, as the others looked more like front cover shots. I also made the masthead on this cover page white, and made it fit the whole top of the page as this fitted it better and looked more like existing magazine covers. I then added text at the bottom the page saying 'The Autumn 2018 Fashion Issue' which I found other magazines have done and it made the cover look less empty, while describing what will be inside and suggesting it is a fashion magazine. I added the model's name to make them seem like a celebrity model which other magazines do.

Cover Page 2 Mock up:

In my real second magazine cover I also used a more close up shot, but I also got rid of the red lighting as I felt that it looked much better without it as the photos came out more red than I would have liked to use. I also made the masthead white and fit the whole page, as I did with my over cover, to make them the same to fit a house style. I then added the text to make this the winter fashion issue and her name for the same reasons as the last cover, and to try and establish a house style.

Audience Research

Audience Research

The audience that I wanted to aim my magazine at are aged 16-22 and I also would like to aim at both males and females, so I carried out a questionnaire within a focus group that had a range of ages from 16 to 22 and with both males and females. I included more younger people at the lower end of the range within this focus group as I wanted to aim more at the younger end of the demographic to attract more young people into reading about fashion. I also thought there was more of a gap in the market for younger people as other magazines in a similar style to the one that I wanted to create are aimed at more of the older end of the demographic.

I asked different questions about what should be included in my front pages and website, and also about what styles they prefer. I would then create my magazine based on these results as I want to make my magazine for the right audience and also for it to be successful.

The first question I asked was 'do you read any magazines currently?'
The results I got was 29% of people in my focus group do currently purchase and read magazines. I wanted to make one that would encourage more people in this demographic to purchase magazines and become excited about fashion. But i feel as though most people this age do most of their reading about fashion and news online and through social media. So I will combat this issue by having active social media pages for my magazine and lots of features on my website.

Another question that I asked was 'Does having lots of sell lines on a front cover make you want to purchase a magazine more than if there was limited sell lines?"
The results I got from this question is that 23% of people are more likely to buy a magazine if there are lots of sell lines on it. Therefore, on my magazine I am not going to include sell lines or have very few as they are not important to the majority of my target audience and I would rather achieve a cleaner and neater look with my magazine.

I also asked my focus group "'How old are the models on a magazine that you would most likely buy?'
82% of the focus group I asked suggested that the age of the models should be 16 to 19 which reflects the age of the focus group. I will therefore use models that are in this age bracket as it will target the demographic I want to attract more.

The last question I asked my focus group is "Would you rather buy a magazine that is environmentally friendly and is against fast fashion?'
93% of my focus group agreed that they would rather buy a magazine that supports the environment, so in my website I will write a section 'about us' that describes its ideology and how it supports these things.

Research - Codes and Conventions

Codes and Conventions for Front Covers

  • Have a face on the front cover. I found that all of the magazine's that I looked at similar to the one that I want to create have had a model's face on it, they are often looking directly at the camera so I will follow this convention of other Fashion Magazines onto mine.
  • Have the magazine name clearly visible. This masthead is normally at the top of the page so it helps distinguish the brand name and as my one is a new unrecognisable magazine I want mine to be visible so people know the brand name.
  • The model or celebrity's name on the front page.
  • The issue number is often printed somewhere on the page for reference to which order the magazines go in.
  • There is a bar code on all of the other magazines that I have looked at in different places on the page.
  • High key lighting is used on the faces of the model's.
  • The type of magazine's that I have looked at there has not been many sell lines and they have a much neat and cleaner look.
  • Include a logo for the company that has produced the magazine.
  • Include a season and year for the magazine. A lot of the cover's that I looked at had the season which the magazine came out in.

Codes and Conventions for Contents pages

  • There are headlines for different key pages throughout the magazine with page numbers next to them so readers can easily access these. There is also a brief description of what the article is about and some have the name of the person the article was written by.
  • There are normally more than 1 image on each page and they have captions underneath describing the photo and a page number for more information. In these images there is also people from the front cover usually.
  • Often a single page and has contents written at the top clearly.
  • There are clear columns of writing on the contents and they are very organised.
  • They have sections such as Fashion, Beauty, and whats on the cover which separates the different articles into these, normally in different columns.

Codes and Conventions for Website

  • Having articles about various things on the home page.  These are normally to do with fashion, beauty or lifestyle.
  • A main title page to open to website to. This was normally of someone that is relevant to the magazine at the time, for example someone who is on one of their covers at the moment.
  • Have a contact us section that people can fill out.
  • Have an about us page with more information about the brand.
  • Having a shop that you can buy clothes from that are featured in the magazine or where you can buy their magazines.
