Research - Codes and Conventions

Codes and Conventions for Front Covers

  • Have a face on the front cover. I found that all of the magazine's that I looked at similar to the one that I want to create have had a model's face on it, they are often looking directly at the camera so I will follow this convention of other Fashion Magazines onto mine.
  • Have the magazine name clearly visible. This masthead is normally at the top of the page so it helps distinguish the brand name and as my one is a new unrecognisable magazine I want mine to be visible so people know the brand name.
  • The model or celebrity's name on the front page.
  • The issue number is often printed somewhere on the page for reference to which order the magazines go in.
  • There is a bar code on all of the other magazines that I have looked at in different places on the page.
  • High key lighting is used on the faces of the model's.
  • The type of magazine's that I have looked at there has not been many sell lines and they have a much neat and cleaner look.
  • Include a logo for the company that has produced the magazine.
  • Include a season and year for the magazine. A lot of the cover's that I looked at had the season which the magazine came out in.

Codes and Conventions for Contents pages

  • There are headlines for different key pages throughout the magazine with page numbers next to them so readers can easily access these. There is also a brief description of what the article is about and some have the name of the person the article was written by.
  • There are normally more than 1 image on each page and they have captions underneath describing the photo and a page number for more information. In these images there is also people from the front cover usually.
  • Often a single page and has contents written at the top clearly.
  • There are clear columns of writing on the contents and they are very organised.
  • They have sections such as Fashion, Beauty, and whats on the cover which separates the different articles into these, normally in different columns.

Codes and Conventions for Website

  • Having articles about various things on the home page.  These are normally to do with fashion, beauty or lifestyle.
  • A main title page to open to website to. This was normally of someone that is relevant to the magazine at the time, for example someone who is on one of their covers at the moment.
  • Have a contact us section that people can fill out.
  • Have an about us page with more information about the brand.
  • Having a shop that you can buy clothes from that are featured in the magazine or where you can buy their magazines.
