Audience Research
The audience that I wanted to aim my magazine at are aged 16-22 and I also would like to aim at both males and females, so I carried out a questionnaire within a focus group that had a range of ages from 16 to 22 and with both males and females. I included more younger people at the lower end of the range within this focus group as I wanted to aim more at the younger end of the demographic to attract more young people into reading about fashion. I also thought there was more of a gap in the market for younger people as other magazines in a similar style to the one that I wanted to create are aimed at more of the older end of the demographic.
I asked different questions about what should be included in my front pages and website, and also about what styles they prefer. I would then create my magazine based on these results as I want to make my magazine for the right audience and also for it to be successful.
The first question I asked was 'do you read any magazines currently?'
The results I got was 29% of people in my focus group do currently purchase and read magazines. I wanted to make one that would encourage more people in this demographic to purchase magazines and become excited about fashion. But i feel as though most people this age do most of their reading about fashion and news online and through social media. So I will combat this issue by having active social media pages for my magazine and lots of features on my website.
Another question that I asked was 'Does having lots of sell lines on a front cover make you want to purchase a magazine more than if there was limited sell lines?"
The results I got from this question is that 23% of people are more likely to buy a magazine if there are lots of sell lines on it. Therefore, on my magazine I am not going to include sell lines or have very few as they are not important to the majority of my target audience and I would rather achieve a cleaner and neater look with my magazine.
I also asked my focus group "'How old are the models on a magazine that you would most likely buy?'
82% of the focus group I asked suggested that the age of the models should be 16 to 19 which reflects the age of the focus group. I will therefore use models that are in this age bracket as it will target the demographic I want to attract more.
The last question I asked my focus group is "Would you rather buy a magazine that is environmentally friendly and is against fast fashion?'
93% of my focus group agreed that they would rather buy a magazine that supports the environment, so in my website I will write a section 'about us' that describes its ideology and how it supports these things.
